Eunshin Lee Okumoto, MA ’95, immigrated to the U.S. from Korea as a teenager. She adapted quickly and went on to eventually join USF’s first master’s cohort in Asia Pacific Studies.

Lee loved USF but recalls how hard it was to work while in school. “I swam laps at the Koret Center between work and classes in order to stay awake. It was difficult to participate in other activities because I had no time and was so tired. I want to help people work a little less so they can make the most of their time at USF,” says Lee.

Lee earned a merit scholarship and completed her master’s degree. Lee credits USF for giving her confidence in life and greater empathy when working in the diverse Bay Area. She spent a long career with the City and County of San Francisco, serving the airport and the public utilities commissions.

Now retired, Lee teaches Art of Tea Ceremony classes locally. Lee explains, “The tea and flower study was part of my retirement plan as it keeps me centered and disciplined. It is my way to give back.”

Lee is also giving back by naming USF as the beneficiary of her retirement plan to create the Eunshin Lee Okumoto Endowed Scholarship. Lee can continue to use the money in her plan as she needs it, and the remainder will go to this endowed fund to support scholarships for students with financial need.

“I wish to give the opportunity to students of all backgrounds to learn at USF, where the University’s mission and commitment to diversity reinforces values that align with my own values. USF is preparing students for the future work environment and to be strong leaders,” says Lee.
